We will be using this page to keep you updated regarding the current rowing season at CAIBC over the coming weeks and months.  We would also like to use it to build up an archive of how CAIBC has faired in the past.  So if you have information about how the school has done in the past, please send a copy to us at chairman @ cobrarowing.co.uk  (remove the 2 spaces from the email address and put "COBRA" in the subject title to avoid the spam detector).

PLEASE send me any club/crew photographs (as jpeg files) that do not appear on these pages.  It would also be helpful if anyone could send me a photocopy of the Rowing reports from the school magazine, so something could be written about each year.  Thanks.

Coleraine Academical Institution Boat Club was the scene for a terrific days training, fun and friendship between the three Ulster rowing schools on Saturday 29th May.  Methodist College Belfast and Royal Belfast Academical Institution both made the journey north to attend the inaugural Ulster Schools Training day.

The River Bann, on which CAIBC is proudly built, is not only one of the most picturesque rivers in the country, but it is also undoubtedly one of its best rowing training venues as well.  With over 7 miles of straight, wide water it enables the coaches to plan long challenging outings without the need to continually stop and turn their crews as they do on many other rivers.  The rain that fell did little to dampen spirits as the water was flat calm, perfect for rowing.

RBAI, MCB & CAI oarsmen after a good mornings training.

RBAIs Senior VIII came to train alongside CAIs J16 VIII and both schools crews benefited from the long, tough water sessions.

MCBs J15s came to train along with CAIs J15s, both in individual school club crews and in inter school club crews.  The latter gave the boys of both clubs the chance to get to know each other and each other’s distinctive rowing styles.  The day ended with a thrilling race between three inter-club VIIIs, organised, marshalled and umpired by CAIBC coach Ross Cochrane.  He rose to the not inconsiderable challenge of lining the three young crews up in a running start but also in keeping them apart during the race from The Old Bridge to the Boat House.

The day was rounded of in style with a BBQ, ably cooked by Dr Hull, Master in Charge of Rowing at CAI.  Despite the inclement weather he manned the BBQ for hours, ensuring that all the hungry oarsmen had food aplenty when they finished their training.  This was massively appreciated by all who were present – oarsmen, coaches, parents and spectators alike.

On behalf of CAI we would like to re-iterate our thanks to Dr Hull, Ross Cochrane, Charlie McMullan and all the other CAIBC coaches, for organising such a fine day.    We would also like to thank the coaches and oarsmen of RBAI and MCB for attending, and the parents who provided food.  I know all who were present are already looking forward to the next time the Ulster rowing schools can get together again!

Irish Championship Regatta

The men's Intermediate pair was the first event of the weekend and the first race of the weekend was dominated by the CAI pair of Old Boys Michael McNaul and Steven Archibald.  After a tentative start the pair settled into a strong rhythm and gradually worked their way through the field and were in the lead by the 1250metre mark.  They pulled out an advantage on the remaining 5 boats and crossed the line comfortably ahead of their nearest rivals, Neptune from Dublin.  These two crews progressed to the final.  In the final the crew had a less settled display and struggled to keep pace with their more experienced competition.  They pushed hard all the way finally finishing fifth in a very good field.

The next event for the Coleraine Inst contingent was the Men's senior coxless four.  Taking place on Friday evening this was one of the toughest events to win in recent years at the Irish Championships, but the crew of Jonathan Mitchell, Michael McNaul, Robert Hart and Steven Archibald were prepared for the challenge.  As the first CAI crew in modern times to race in a senior event at the Championships they positively reacted to the situation and raced as hard as they could over the 2,000 metre distance against opposition with World and Olympic experience.  After a reasonable start the crew progressed over the next 750 metres to obtain fourth place in the 6 boat field.  The crew then began to attack the crew from Belfast sitting in third.  The two crews battled hard over the second half of the course with the Belfast boat just coming out ahead.  The Coleraine crew had made an impressive entrance into the ranks of senior rowing, coming away with a credible fourth place.

The other competitor racing for CAI at the Championships was Chris Black, competing in the extremely competitive Intermediate Single event.  Chris was unlucky in his draw and drew the eventual winner along with a number of other very fast scullers.  He made a really solid effort within the race, but was unfortunately not able to progress beyond a very classy heat.

Due to high winds and expected gusty conditions, Saturdays racing was moved forward, so Jonathan Mitchell had less preparation time than hoped for before his attack on the Junior single category.  Due to the very high number of competitors involved in this field there were a total of 6 heats, with only the top 2 progressing from each.  Jonathan proved to be in a different class to the other individuals in his heat and made light work of the race, dropping his rating for the second half and comfortably paddling home clear of the field.  The semi-final was a tougher race, but the result was the same.  After positioning himself in third, the last of the qualifying positions, Jonathan decided to raise a push for the finish to show what he could do.  His push was very effective and took him into the lead, where he remained until the finish line.  About half an hour before the final the weather turned even worse and no more boats were permitted to race.  During this time, in boat-sinking conditions, Jonathan's boat got over-turned by a freak wave.  He gathered himself together and rather than back out decided to race the final with far from ideal preparations.  Jonathan raced really well and acquitted himself fantastically in the conditions.  On the line he was judged to have come sixth only a matter of feet behind the fourth place boat.

The main event for the CAI squad at the Championships was the Men's Intermediate coxed four.  An event last competed in by the school 12 years ago.  In a highly competitive event CAI lined up in their heat against crews from Belfast, Cork, Galway and Dublin.  With only two through to the final the crew of Jonathan Mitchell, Michael McNaul, Robert Hart, Steven Archibald and Perry Stynes, knew the racing would be relentless over the distance.  After getting off the start in fourth the CAI crew settled into a powerful rhythm.  A strong push at half-way helped them into third ahead of the crew from Cork.  They then started to attack the Belfast crew and in a reversal of the senior fours result the CAI boys managed to get clear of Belfast and into the second qualifying spot, behind Galway.  In the final the four made every effort to stay with the race as long as possible and at half-way were overlapping with the top three.  The crew raced with a strong attitude and put themselves right in with the best Intermediate crews in Ireland, including university crews from Dublin and Galway.  In the second half the Inst boat attacked again and again and pushed the top three all the way, but were just not able to claw back the lost ground.  The four finished in fourth place, a very admirable position considering the time spent in the boat.

Winter Head Season

As they have been doing for the past few seasons, in order to break up the long winter training, CAI decided to enter some of the pre-Christmas Head races organised by various clubs within Northern Ireland. The only difference from previous years was that this time some of the COBRA members were able to compete in these events too.

The CAIBC school-boy/old boy crew who raced at Bann mini-headThe first race of the season was at Bann Head of the River. Due to rough conditions on the day only one of the two scheduled races took place over a shortened course and due to restrictions on participants for safety reasons, only 4 boats took to the water. One of those boats, however, was an Old Boys (racing as their various regular clubs)-School Boys composite. Due to injury Jamie McBurney had removed himself from the crew, but an 8 with a range of Old Boys, along with Johnny Mitchell and with Peri Stynes coxing took to the water. The race, of approximately 2,000 metres from Seaton's Marina to the yacht club was raced in fiercely windy conditions. The crew started first and after a shakey start settled well and pulled away from an impressive Bann J16 crew. The race was tough, but enjoyed by all and the winning margin over the other crews was satisfactory in the end.

CAI and COBRA were also represented in three Mini-Heads in Belfast over the winter. Belfast Rowing Club organised the first one, over a 4,500 m course. The school was represented by Johnny Mitchell in the single, who had a fantastic race to come 2nd overall in the category and beat some well established scullers. The other boat was entered as a CAI/RBAI composite, but comprised Michael McNaul and Steven Archibald (both COBRA) in a pair. In only their second outing together they had a solid row and finished a creditable 9th overall, winning the pairs category.

CAIBC and COBRA members racing together and winning the senior 4x.The next race was organised by Lagan Scullers' Club and featured just sculling categories. Again CAI and COBRA were strongly represented, with Johnny Mitchell, Michael McNaul and Steven Archibald all racing in singles and performing well in the first division. In the second division these three individuals, along with Elliot Clarke combined to race in a quad that very handily dealt with a seasoned Bann/BBC crew, amongst others, in order to record the fastest time in that division. The final race featured a very tired Mitchell and McNaul combining for their third gruelling 3,000m race in two hours, this time in a double. They again performed well and won this category also.

the victorious J15 VIIIThe final race of the pre-Christmas season was the annual BRC festive Mini-Head. The Old Boys unfortun-ately were not represented due to illness and injury, but Johnny Mitchell again should great determin-ation to finish with a time not much off that of the junior 4x, again showing his increasing ability in the single...roll on regatta season.

J18 Four R Hart, R Dinsmore, M McCullough and M McNaul had a tremendous row in a straight final against Methodist College. The race was very nerve racking to watch for the crowd who looked on. Coleraine inst got off to a flying start taking MCB by half a length, although as the race progressed, Coleraine Inst unfortunately steered on to MCB’s lane causing the opposition to slow down. Even though Coleraine Insts first four was leading, the race was awarded to MCB for jeopardizing their chance in the race.R Hart, and J McBurney unfortunately lost in their straight final by half a canvas. Nevertheless the race was very exciting to watch by the crowd as it was neck and neck most of the way.

Wray and Craig Cup
On the 19th of June, the rowers from Coleraine Inst participated in the Wray and Craig cups held at Portora Royal on lough Erne. The Wray cup is an annual race between Portora and Coleraine’s 1st four, this however is the first time that it had had been raced in 17 years. It is an ancient tradition started in 1930 and both schools were eager to re-establish this race on the rowing calander. The Craig Cup is raced between the Junior 16 8’s in the province of Ulster, it is a highly coveted race as the winners become Ulster champions.

There were five crews entered in the Craig cup, our own Coleraine Inst, Belfast Inst, Portora Royal, Portadown and Methodist College. As there were do many crews there had to be heats to qualify for the final. The first heat was between Portora Royal and Portadown. This was raced over 1500m and Portora won easily progressing to the final. The second heat was between the remaining crews, Belfast Inst, Coleraine Inst and Methodist College. In this heat two crews would proceed to have a three boat final. This was a very close race all round with Coleraine taking second place, one length behind Belfast Inst. Methodist College was third. An hour later the final of the Craig Cup took place and the eventual winners were Portora Royal closely followed by Belfast Inst then Coleraine Inst.

Next on the agenda was the Wray cup. This was to be held on the same 1500 meter course as the Craig cup, and is a traditional race between Coleraine Inst and Portora Royal School. After a competitive start to the race, Inst edged there way out in front of the hosts. With this lead our boys from Coleraine slowly crept further in front of the their opposition to secure a comfortable win of the three lengths.

The Irish Champs saw a CAIBC coming 5th in the J18 pair, 6th in the J18 four and 5th in the J18 quad. Our J18 eight failed to qualify for the finals

the first VIII+ rows up the Lagan at the first race of the yearThe season started off with the annual trip to Lagan Head of the River. The J18 8+ had a good race, despite being held up by a certain Commercial Crew. The J16 4x+ had a well deserved victory, winning their class by 40 seconds, over the likes of RBAI and Methody.

The next race was Erne Head of the River, which only the J18 8+ participated in. The crew had an amazing row over the 6km course but came second to Neptune.

Clockwise from top left:- J18 VIII+ @ Queens; J18 IV+ @ Portadown; J18 VIII+ @ Portora; J18 IV+ @ QueensRegatta season began with a trip to Neptune Regatta, where the J18 4+ was striving to show their worth in Southern Ireland, and came close second to Commercial in a nail-biting final. The J16 4x+ was desperate to overcome the bad luck in racing down South, but came through beating Waterford and Portora comfortably.

Clockwise from top left:- the J16 VIII+ @ Portadown; J18 4x- @ Portora; J16IV+ @ Queens; J164x+ @ QueensThe hotly-anticipated race, Queens Regatta, caused a stir in the club over the desperately early morning, but all of the lads were up to the challenge. The J18 4+ came third in an exciting race which involved the usual suspects, Methody and RBAI.  The J18 8+ had a disappointing result, (which was mostly due to the fact that half of the crew was racing a mere 20 minutes earlier), coming third to RBAI and Methody.  The J16 4+ had an unexpected, but well deserved, victory over Portadown and Methody. One of the guys was so chuffed over winning he wouldn’t take his medal off!  Yet again, the J16 4x+ won, but were a length down to Portora after 200 metres. There were two victories in this race as the cox managed to break Methody’s steering without doing any damage to CAI’s boat at all!!

the J16 4x+ hold onto their lead to beat Carlow at Portora RegattaThe weekend after, the club went down to Portadown to compete in the annual regatta there. The J18 4+ lost out in an exciting semi final to Methody, which was our first race of the day.  The J16 4+ were eager to carry on winning but lost by half a length to Portadown in an eagerly anticipated final.  The J16 8+ won their category, beating RBAI and Portadown in a close final, winning a certain Gibson Cup for their victory.  The Novice 8+ lost out on medals in a final against Portadown, after sitting at the start waiting for the other crew to arrive after a staggering 40 minutes.  The J18 8+ were defeated after a rudder failure causing them to bow out of the race.  The J16 4x+ won convincingly in good style after beating Methody and RBAI.  And of course, the Novice 1x lost out to RBAI in a convincing final.

Yes, miracles do happen. Calum isn't talking!Calum McBurney

There was another win for the J16 4x+, this time at the Portora Sprint Regatta.  They had very tough opposition in the form of Carlow, undefeated south of the border.  A very close final saw the Coleraine crew pull through to win by 6 feet over the 500m course.
Belfast Sprint Regatta saw another win for the J16 4x+ as well as a win for Johnny Mitchell in the J15 1x, a win for the J16 VIII+ and a win for the J18 4x-.

Athlone Regatta saw the J16 4x maintain there undefeated season by 2 feet over Offaly.
The Craig Cup (Ulster J16 championships) was hosted by the holders of the Cup (CAIBC) between the New bridge and Bann boathouse in Coleraine.  Five crews entered the race which saw a win for Portora by half a canvas from Coleraine Inst.  Methody finished third in the final, while Belfast Inst and Portadown were beaten in the semis.

Huston Cup and Banana Boat Cup

Saturday 25th June 2005 was a full day for CAIBC.  It dawned grey and overcast but the sun eventually broke through enough to make it a pleasant, warmish day.  Philip Braithwaite, the star coach of the Craig Cup winning J16 VIII had divided the entire club in two, with one batch of boys racing the opening rounds of both cups in the morning, and the other batch “Bag Packing” in Safeway’s as a fund raising venture.  These two groups swapped over after lunch so that all boys had the opportunity both to race and to fund raise for their club before meeting back at the club for the finals of both cups, and a well deserved BBQ.

Marcus Ewing looks suitably unimpressed by Mark winning the Banana boat races. While Philip just looks......It turned out to be an extremely exciting day for all those involved: for the boys who took part in hard fought races, for those coaches who have trained the boys all year to see the fruits of their labour, and to the spectators who lapped up the atmosphere around the launching and landing area.

Mark Reid (Banana Cup winner) and David Ewart (Huston Cup winner) with the main man of the day Conor Campbell in the middle, who kept us all well fed!Even the somewhat choppy condition did nothing to detract from this, indeed the author believes that it actually added to the boys achievements.  Some senior scalps were taken by much more junior boys (in both age and physical stature!), two of the most notable occasions were in the Huston cup – in the first round where the J15 Jamie McBurney beat the J17 Aimal Khan, and perhaps most impressively where the diminutive J15 Michael McNaul beat the J16 colossus that is Ryan Dinsmore.

All involved had a great day and we would like to thank all those that made the day possible, especially Conor Campbell for giving up his birthday to set up and man the BBQ with great results.
